Microsoft removed Publisher from Microsoft 365 in October 2026, and a lot of schools, churches, clubs, and small businesses were left with years of
.pub files they could no longer open. PubRestore converts them to PDF, editable PowerPoint, and editable Word, and repairs the layout mistakes LibreOffice makes along the way. What it does
- Free preview of every page before you pay
- Three formats for one credit: PDF, PowerPoint with the exact layout, and Word with flowing text
- Layout repairs for overlapping text, repeated columns, and other LibreOffice slips
- Private by design: each file is converted in its own fresh container with no internet access, then deleted after 48 hours
- Live progress over a single server-sent events stream, no polling
- Pay per file with credit packs that never expire, no subscription
How it is built
It runs entirely on Cloudflare. Next.js on Workers through OpenNext, D1 and R2 for data and files, Queues for jobs, a Durable Object per file for live progress, and Containers running Python with LibreOffice for the conversion itself. oRPC, Drizzle, Better Auth, and Polar fill in the rest.
I wrote up the pipeline in How PubRestore converts a file.
